1999年にロックの殿堂入りを果たし、2005年にグラミー賞の特別功労賞を受賞したアメリカのゴスペル／ソウル・グループ、ザ・ステイプル・シンガーズのイヴォンヌ・ステイプルズが、火曜日（4月10日）シカゴにある自宅で亡くなった。『Chicago Tribune』紙によると、数週間前に癌を患っていると診断されたばかりだったという。80歳だった。

父ローバック、息子パーヴィス、娘クレオサとメイヴィスにより結成されたザ・ステイプル・シンガーズに、イヴォンヌは1970年、脱退した兄パーヴィスの代わりに加入。グループはその後すぐメジャー・ブレイクを果たし、全米1位に輝いた「I’ll Take You There」「Let’s Do It Again」、「Respect Yourself」、「If You’re Ready (Come Go with Me)」など多くのヒットを生み出した。

イヴォンヌは、80年代から妹メイヴィスのソロ活動に参加するだけでなく、マネージメントも行なうようになり、2000年に父が亡くなったとき歌うのを止めたメイヴィスを励まし、復帰させたのも彼女だったという。イヴォンヌは数年前にリタイアしたばかりだった。
