ザ・クラッシュとPiLの創設メンバー、キース・レヴィンが死去

ザ・クラッシュとパブリック・イメージ・リミテッドの初期のメンバーとして知られたギタリストのキース・レヴィンが、11月11日、65歳で亡くなったという。
レヴィンは1976年、ミック・ジョーンズらとザ・クラッシュを結成したが、短期間在籍したのみで、彼らがファースト・アルバム『The Clash』（1977年）をリリースする前に脱退。1978年、セックス・ピストルズを脱退したジョン・ライドンが新たに結成したパブリック・イメージ・リミテッドに初代ギタリストとして加入した。
パブリック・イメージ・リミテッドには1983年まで在籍し、ファースト『Public Image: First Issue』（1978年）からサード『The Flowers Of Romance』（1981年）まで3枚のスタジオ・アルバムを制作した。
その後はアメリカへ移住し、レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズやヒップホップ・アーティストのデモ等の制作を手掛け、80年代後半からは自身のアルバムをリリースし続けていた。
レヴィンの友人で、SNSを通じ彼の訃報を伝えた作家のAdam Hammondは、レヴィンはこの2年間、肝臓がんを患っていたものの、死は突然だったと話している。Hammondと共にパブリック・イメージ・リミテッドに関する本を執筆し終わったところで、ほかにも様々な事柄に取り掛かっていたという。
It is with great sadness I report that my close friend and legendary Public Image Limited guitarist Keith Levene passed away on Friday 11th November.
There is no doubt that Keith was one of the most innovative, audacious and influential guitarists of all time.

Keith sought to create a new paradigm in music and with willing collaborators John Lydon and Jah Wobble succeeded in doing just that. His guitar work over the nine minutes of ‘Theme’, the first track on the first PiL album, defined what alternative music should be.

As well as helping to make PiL the most important band of the age, Keith also founded The Clash with Mick Jones and had a major influence on their early sound.
So much of what we listen to today owes much to Keith’s work, some of it acknowledged, most of it not.
