Trying to find the words to express my sadness about the passing of #MarkHollis #TalkTalk Hearing Spirit Of Eden blew my 18 year old mind to such a degree I set out to try and learn how on earth they had created this transcendent masterpiece. That search turned into a career. I needed to find the records which had influenced it and the techniques they used and I’m still searching for the feeling of that music today. In ‘97 I was a runner at Air Studios when Mark and the great Phill Brown came in to mix Mark’s solo opus and I insisted on assisting them. Mark very kindly gave me a list of records which he’d been inspired by.. Can’s Tato Mago, Miles’ Sketches Of Spain, Gyorky Ligeti’s Atmospheres amongst others you can hear clearly the ambience of all those later records which gave them unparalleled depth and dynamic. And if you’ve read Phill Brown’s wonderful book #arewerolling , I’m the tape op who called the maintenance dept to say the tape machine was making a clicking sound, just before the master tape jammed against the headblock and exploded showering me with tiny .. fragments of the tape. We missed the end of the track by 2 seconds and according to Phill if I remember correctly there wasn’t a master copy of the same quality. Rest In Peace Mark and my condolences to his friends, family and fans like me. The records live forever x
