UKパンク・ロック・シーンを代表するバンドの1つ、バズコックスのリード・シンガー、ピート・シェリーが12月6日、亡くなった。63歳だった。

バズコックスのマネージメントは、シェリーは在住していたエストニアで、息を引き取ったとBBCに話している。心臓発作だったと考えられているという。バンドは「とても悲しいことだが、多大な影響力を持ち多くの作品を残したUKのソングライターの1人で、独創的でオリジナルのパンク・バンド、バズコックスの共同創設者だったピート・シェリーが亡くなったことを報告する」「ピートの音楽は50年に渡り、多くの世代のミュージシャンにインスピレーションを与え、バンド、ソロ共々、音楽業界や世界中にいるファンから高く評価されてきた」とのツイートを残した。

It’s with great sadness that we confirm the death of Pete Shelley, one of the UK’s most influential and prolific songwriters and co-founder of the seminal original punk band Buzzcocks.

Pete’s music has inspired generations of musicians over a career that spanned five decades and with his band and as a solo artist, he was held in the highest regard by the music industry and by his fans around the world.

シェリーは70年代半ば、セックス・ピストルズのライブを観て、ハワード・ディヴォートとバズコックスを結成。1978年にデビュー・アルバム『Another Music In A Different Kitchen』を発表し、セカンド『Love Bites』（同じく1978年）から「Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)」がヒットした。

セックス・ピストルズのギタリスト、スティーヴ・ジョーンズは、2004年にシェリーが彼のラジオ番組にゲスト出演したときの写真を投稿し、「非常に残念だ。ピートはOGだった。彼はパンクの人気が出る前からそこにいた。レスト・イージー、友よ」と追悼の言葉を寄せた。
