ケンドリック・ラマーが、水曜日（5月30日）米コロンビア大学で開かれたピューリッツァー賞の授賞式に出席し、2017年春に発表した4枚目のスタジオ・アルバム『DAMN.』で、ヒップホップ・アーティストとして初の同アワード音楽部門受賞者となった。

スーツ姿の男性が多い中、ケンドリックは柄の入った黒いシャツに黄色いジャージのパンツというカジュアルな姿で登場。スタンディング・オベーションの中、賞を受け取った。そのとき受賞のスピーチはなかったが、後に、ピューリッツアーのFacebookライブ映像で、「光栄だ。僕は生涯ずっと曲を書いてきた。だからこのような形で認められるのは、ビューティフルだ」と話したという。

アメリカ人が作曲し、その年アメリカでレコーディングもしくは初めてパフォーマンスされた重要な側面を持つ楽曲へ贈られる同賞は、1943年に設立されて以来、クラシックの作品が受賞することが多く、ボブ・ディラン、ハンク・ウィリアムズらへ特別賞が贈られているが、クラシック、ジャズ以外のジャンルの作品が受賞するのはケンドリックが初めてだった。

ケンドリックの受賞は4月中旬に発表され、以来、彼のツアーではステージに「Pulitzer Kenny」とのバックドロップが見られた。

『DAMN.』は、今年のグラミー賞でアルバム・オブ・ザ・イヤーは逃したが、最優秀ラップ・アルバムを受賞した。
